In Femmes et fleurs de lotus (Ladies and Lotuses)<\/em>, Boi Tran presents two female figures within a deliberately flattened and restrained pictorial space. The composition is frontal and closed, offering no narrative progression. Repeated lotus leaves form a patterned backdrop, functioning less as landscape than as a stabilising visual rhythm.<\/p>\n

The gestures are ritualised rather than expressive. One figure gently holds a cluster of lotus buds; the other rests her hands in a composed, symmetrical posture. The lotus, an enduring symbol of purity and renewal in Vietnamese and broader Buddhist visual culture, is neither emphasised nor elevated. Instead, it is absorbed into the formal structure of the painting, operating as a compositional anchor rather than a symbolic declaration.<\/p>\n

The muted palette of ochre, earthy greens, and softened browns suppresses movement and drama, reinforcing a sense of suspension and inwardness. Depth is reduced, and the figures appear held against the surface, enhancing the painting’s contemplative stillness.<\/p>\n
