His studies were interrupted by the First World War, during which he was wounded. In the years that followed, he developed an early interest in scenes of labour and working life, subjects that would remain important throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p>A travelling scholarship in 1924 took him through Italy, Greece and Egypt. The following year, he arrived in Hanoi to join the newly established \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts de l&#8217;Indochine, where he taught decorative arts and painting. He remained in Vietnam for more than 20 years, leaving in 1946.<\/p>\n<p>Inguimberty&#8217;s teaching combined rigorous academic training with sustained observation of Vietnamese life. He placed particular importance on drawing, anatomy and the study of the human figure, while encouraging students to work directly from their surroundings. His influence was especially marked on artists such as To Ngoc Van and Nguyen Gia Tri.<\/p>\n<p>His role in the development of lacquer painting was equally significant. Inguimberty encouraged students to investigate lacquer beyond its established decorative uses, helping to establish it as a medium for modern painting. This experimentation would prove fundamental to the later work of Nguyen Gia Tri and to the broader development of twentieth-century Vietnamese lacquer.<\/p>\n<p>As a painter, Inguimberty returned repeatedly to rice fields, villages, labourers and women observed in everyday life. His works are characterised by close attention to light, colour and the physical structure of the landscape.
