He belonged to the same generation as Le Pho and Nguyen Phan Chanh, whose training marked the emergence of modern Vietnamese painting during the interwar period.

Following his graduation, Mai Trung Thu taught drawing in Hue. These years proved formative. He painted portraits, domestic interiors and scenes of daily life, working principally in oil on canvas while developing the linear precision and measured compositions that would remain characteristic of his later work. His participation in the 1931 Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris brought his paintings before a wider audience.

In 1937, Mai Trung Thu left Vietnam for France, where he settled permanently. From this point onward, he gradually abandoned oil painting in favour of ink and gouache on silk, the medium with which his name became most closely associated.

His subjects remained closely tied to Vietnamese culture: women in ao dai, mothers and children, scholars, musicians, literary themes and scenes of domestic life. Unlike Le Pho or Vu Cao Dam, whose practices underwent significant changes in medium and style, Mai Trung Thu maintained remarkable continuity throughout his career. His paintings repeatedly returned to the forms, customs and values of the country he had left behind.

Working in France until his death in 1980, Mai Trung Thu developed a highly controlled pictorial language in which fine line, carefully modulated colour and the absorbent surface of silk were brought into close balance. His work occupies a distinct position within the first generation of Vietnamese artists established in France.

Selected Artist Selected Artists Mai Trung Thu Mai Trung Thu (Vietnam/France, 1906-1980) Born in Hai Phong in 1906, Mai Trung Thu entered the first class of the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine in Hanoi in 1925 and graduated in 1930.
