Victor Tardieu

Victor Tardieu arrived in Hanoi on 2 February 1921, at the age of 51, following the award of the Prix de l’Indochine the previous year. By then, he had already established a substantial career in France as a painter and decorator, notably through large-scale public commissions. What was initially conceived as a temporary stay in Indochina would determine the remaining sixteen years of his life.

In Hanoi, Tardieu undertook the monumental decoration of the University of Indochina. The commission brought him into sustained contact with the cultural and intellectual life of Tonkin and preceded the undertaking with which his name would become most closely associated: the establishment of the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine in 1924. The school opened in Hanoi in 1925, with Tardieu as its first director, a position he retained until his death.

The teaching of the École combined academic disciplines, drawing, perspective, composition and painting, with close attention to Vietnamese subjects, materials and techniques. Rather than producing a uniform style, this structure provided its students with the technical foundations from which markedly individual practices emerged.

Among those trained during Tardieu’s directorship were Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, Vu Cao Dam, Nguyen Phan Chanh, To Ngoc Van and Nguyen Gia Tri. Tardieu also understood that the school’s success depended upon the circulation of their work beyond Hanoi. He encouraged exhibitions and secured the school’s participation in the 1931 Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris, where its artists reached a wider public.

Tardieu remained in Hanoi until his death in 1937. His years in Vietnam were therefore defined not only by his own painting, but by the institution through which a generation of Vietnamese artists received the training, exposure and professional framework that would shape modern Vietnamese art.
