This diptych presents a landscape articulated through a dense vertical arrangement of trees, within which small human figures appear dispersed and understated. Rather than functioning as narrative agents, the figures are subsumed into the structure of the landscape, reinforcing a compositional logic based on continuity, repetition, and duration.
The composition resists linear perspective. Depth is constructed through layered foliage, tonal modulation, and the measured recession of paths that curve inward rather than lead outward. This inward circulation stabilises the image, encouraging sustained viewing rather than directional movement.
Executed in lacquer with restrained mother-of-pearl inlay, the surface demonstrates Boi Tran’s controlled engagement with traditional materials. The inlay is integrated into the vegetal passages, where it intermittently catches light, activating the surface without asserting decorative emphasis. Its function is material rather than symbolic, contributing to the sense of accumulated time inherent to lacquer practice.
The palette is dominated by muted greens, browns, and softened earth tones, maintaining chromatic restraint. The landscape is presented not as a specific site, but as a sustained condition, one shaped by quiet gathering, stillness, and temporal depth.
