In Rassemblement sur la colline de Thien An (Gathering at Thien An Hill), Boi Tran sets three female figures within the dense vegetation of Thien An Hill. The composition is governed by the vertical rhythm of the trees, crossed by the winding road leading towards Thien An Monastery. Rising diagonally through the left panel, the road draws the eye into the wooded landscape and establishes its depth through successive layers of foliage, ochre ground and shadow.
The lacquer surface is enriched with restrained mother-of-pearl inlay, catching the light intermittently among the vegetation. Deep greens, browns and warm earth tones maintain a subdued chromatic register.
The gathering itself is quiet and unceremonious. The three women occupy only a small part of the composition. Around them, the trees and ascending road remain dominant, locating their presence within the particular landscape of Thien An Hill.
