In Lotus et nostalgie (Lotus and Longing), Boi Tran revisits one of the most enduring currents in her oeuvre: the quiet steadfastness of Vietnamese womanhood. Silhouetted against an expanse of sea and sky, the solitary figure faces the wind in a moment of contemplative stillness. Turning away from the world, she reveals no face, only presence, an intentional anonymity that transforms her into an emblem rather than a portrait, a vessel carrying memory, longing, and the unspoken chapters of an inner life.

The bouquet of white lotus buds, held with an almost ritual delicacy, becomes the work’s still point. Neither in bloom nor in decline, the lotus is caught in a suspended instant, a symbol of purity, of hope, and of the tenderness bestowed upon what is preserved. A slender red ribbon binds the stems, echoing the fine thread between past and present that quietly weaves through Boi Tran’s practice.

The palette, earthy ochres, seafoam greens, and the muted blue of far water, conjures a world emptied of noise, where emotional resonance emerges not through gesture but through atmosphere. The artist’s unmistakable restraint defines the composition: a devotion to stillness, an avoidance of adornment, and a deliberate refusal of sentimentality. Within this softened terrain, memory breathes, and longing becomes not grief, but a form of beauty.

Painted in 2025, the painting extends Boi Tran’s meditation on feminine solitude and spiritual composure, embodying the gentle, enduring sensibility that has shaped her artistic language. Here, longing does not wound; it opens, quiet and vast, like a horizon.
