Boi Tran is a painter and something of a throwback, an anomaly, a creature from another, earlier time in the life of the onetime Imperial City. She lives in an area called Thien An Hill, in a magnificently restored compound. These traditional wooden houses were once part of the regal style, with sloped grooves to handle the rainy Hue weather. But most importantly, she features a garden at the centre which follows the eastern philosophy that all things originate from a single source and expand in all directions. She also cooks, magnificently from a repertoire of Imperial Hue-era dishes numbering over 100. Small, flavorful, and beautifully presented. And that culinary tradition, which gave Hue its reputation as a food capital, continues today.

Boi Tran understands that passion—this vibrant, peppery essence of existence—brings out the full spectrum of life’s flavors, though it often yields more profound repose than restless nights. She resides and creates within her enchanting garden, situated on Thien An Hill in Hue. Here, amidst the timeless grandeur of ancient pine trees swayed by the wind and the demure flowers that resiliently overcome the rain, Boi Tran's artistic spirit flourishes. In this serene retreat, where the relentless passage of Time momentarily pauses its relentless march, visitors are granted a rare and exquisite joy. The garden becomes a sanctuary where the ordinary thief of delights momentarily ceases its heist, allowing for a sublime experience of tranquility and inspiration.

TRAN LUU HAU

VIETNAMESE PAINTER

Boi Tran epitomizes charm and elegance, standing as one of Vietnam's most distinguished figures. As a painter, her artistic prowess is unparalleled, and her contributions to the art world are truly exceptional. She is a source of immense pride for Hue, embodying the city's rich cultural heritage through her extraordinary talent and grace.

Ngo Manh Duc (B. 1941), son of Le Thi Luu (Vietnamese, 1911-1988) born on 1 January 1941, which he enunciates as “1.1.41” with his constant smile, speaking softly and slowly which never fails to grab the listener’s attention. He was brought up in a wonderful atmosphere of painters and intellectuals (often of Vietnamese origin), and this only helped to cement the ideals and traditions of family, close friends and kinships.

The Boi Tran Garden serves as a testament to the rich cultural, artistic, and touristic heritage of Hue. This city, renowned for its mountains and rivers, has nurtured a plethora of talents, drawing inspiration from its storied landscapes. The garden stands as a symbol of Hue's enduring legacy and artistic confidence. In the absence of such art exhibitions, there would be a significant gap in the representation and understanding of the land’s profound historical and cultural narrative.

Despite its modest dimensions, the Boi Tran Garden art gallery emerges as a significant landmark within the city, its impact destined to be perpetually etched in collective memory. A visit to this gallery evokes the poignant sensation of returning to a beloved and cherished presence, one that inspires enduring affection and an indelible sense of nostalgia. It stands as a testament to the city's cultural and artistic heritage, embodying a profound and lasting connection to its historical and aesthetic identity.

Boi Tran, distinguished by her perceptive sensibility and exceptional artistic prowess, profoundly apprehends the inherent beauty of nature as it manifests within her resplendent garden. She skillfully distills this beauty into her artistic oeuvre with profound aesthetic acumen. In essence, the art collection curated by Boi Tran serves as a lyrical representation of Hue, encapsulating the city's essence in a manner akin to a poetic composition forged by the region’s intrinsic talent.

NGUYEN TRONG TAO

Upon engaging with Boi Tran's work, the initial impression is one of profound elegance—a transparent interplay of color and an unblemished purity of form. Her inherent charm emerges distinctly, transcending mere technical skill and accumulated experience. This innate ability is an essential trait of an artist, one that cannot be acquired through practice alone. I previously characterized Boi Tran as a gifted woman from Hue, even before she had showcased her paintings. At that time, she appeared poised to embrace whatever fate might bestow, destined to become a notable figure within the heart of the ancient capital.

It is a profound honor to possess an artwork from an artist who deeply touched me during my visit. Your grace and hospitality during the television shoot were immensely appreciated, and I know that Tony and the entire team were profoundly moved by the experience. It was only when we returned a few days later that I truly felt the depth of your kindness and affection. Your selflessness, warmth, and boundless love, especially as a young parent, serve as an inspiring model for me. Having your painting in my home, where it watches over my family and me, is an extraordinary gift. I am deeply grateful for the memories of our time together and for the tangible reminder of your artistry that enriches our home. Thank you for this cherished experience.

My visit to Boi Tran Garden was a journey into a realm of culinary splendor. There, I had the privilege of meeting Madame Boi Tran herself—a living legend as both an artist and a chef. The garden, with its meticulously maintained greenery and a blend of French and local Hue influences, created a captivating setting. The dining experience mirrored the opulence of royal feasts, though we were admittedly a bit more animated and effusive in our admiration of her exquisite dishes. It was a moment of special significance, as my late friend Anthony Bourdain had previously visited and featured the garden. Madame Boi Tran fondly recalled his visit with a warm and endearing smile, acknowledging his presence with a chuckle, "Yes, hahahahaha, that’s how he was, you are on point." His visit had indeed paved the way, and his legacy was warmly felt in that unforgettable encounter.

In a remarkable testament to its enduring preservation, painter Luu Ly has now entrusted the invaluable sketchbook of Bui Xuan Phai to painter Boi Tran. This bequest is the result of a fortuitous connection: the Fall-Winter art class organized by painter Than Trong Su, which ultimately facilitated the sketchbook's return to Boi Tran. Luu Ly holds the firm belief that Boi Tran will uphold the legacy of these significant sketches and introduce their profound beauty to the broader world.
